WTP News Opens the Live Review Desk: Watch the Evidence, Ask the Questions

The Live Review Desk is open: three windows, the raw evidence on screen, and the pace controlled by the viewer. Pause the tape, ask the question, keep the conversation on the evidence.

WE THE PEOPLE NEWS · NEWSROOM

We The People News has opened a new room in its studio, and it works differently from anything we have put out before. The Live Review Desk, live now at livedesk.wtpnews.org, is a working review session you can sit inside — not a broadcast you watch from outside.

Three windows, one conversation

The desk runs on three panels at once. The first is the Footage Review, where the material itself is walked through and broken down. The second is the Evidence Monitor, holding the raw video up where it can be seen rather than described. The third is the Lead Anchor window, where Marcus Cole is on screen working through what is in front of him.

Everything on the desk is tied to the same rule the newsroom applies everywhere else: evidence in focus, and every voice on the record.

You can stop the tape

What makes the desk different is who controls the pace. Viewers can pause the tape, look again at the moment in question, and then ask out loud or type a question while the footage is still on screen. The question reaches the desk in the moment rather than days later, and the conversation carries on with the evidence sitting right there.

You do not have to take our word for what a frame shows. That is the point. On a story built on a body-camera angle that is repeatedly blocked at the seconds that matter most, being able to stop and look is not a feature — it is the only honest way to do it.

Reach the desk directly

The desk also takes calls. Our newsroom line is (281) 306-5750, and it is answered by our automated news desk, which identifies itself as such at the start of every call. Email reaches the desk at newsdesk@wtpnews.org.

Tipsters and readers can send documents, footage, or an account of something being done to them. If you have material, tell us what it is, roughly when and where it happened, and whether you hold the original files. It will be reviewed. We do not promise coverage, and we do not promise a timeline — we do promise that it will be looked at by a human.

Part of the new studio, not a replacement for it

The Live Review Desk joins the newsroom operations announced earlier today, including the WTPN video anchor studio and a national syndication correspondent. The desk is an addition to our reporting, not a substitute for it: the same accuracy standard applies to what happens on the desk as to anything we publish. Every claim is sourced to records, recordings, or documents, and our public correction-requests channel remains open.

Our AI-assisted work is labelled, every time. Where the desk is automated, it says so. Where AI assistance was used to prepare material, we tell you. Independent, reader-funded journalism has to be able to compete with newsroom budgets that dwarf ours — but never by pretending a machine is a person.

Step inside

The desk is open now at livedesk.wtpnews.org.

New Documentary “Gonzo: Then and Now” Draws a Straight Line From Hunter S. Thompson to Today’s First Amendment Auditors

Fifty years ago, a Kentucky-born writer named Hunter S. Thompson walked into the Kentucky Derby with a notebook, a bottle, and no intention of staying objective. What he filed was not a horse-racing story. It was the birth of gonzo journalism — the reporter as participant, the story told from the inside of the chaos. […]

Eight Shots, Seven Wounds, No Gun: Reading the Frames of the Randy Martin Shooting

We pulled the released Galveston dash and body-camera footage down ourselves and measured it. Eight rounds in 1.64 seconds. Seven wounds, five in the back. No gun recovered from the man who was shot — and the frames that matter most are the ones the car door blocks.
